Sweet and sour sauce is a commonly used dipping sauce in Chinese cuisine that combines a sweet taste with a tangy flavor. It is made with a mixture of sugar, pineapple juice, vinegar, ketchup and ginger. It is often used as a dipping sauce for foods such as egg rolls, chicken nuggets, fish, shrimp and pork dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened pineapple juice

  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 3 tbsp. ketchup

  • 3 tbsp. cornstarch

Directions

  • Whisk together ingredients in a sauce pan. For best results dissolve cornstarch in a few tablespoons of water or pineapple juice in a small bowl before adding to sauce mixture.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring until mixture thickens slightly and comes to a boil. Keep warm until ready to serve. Refrigerate leftovers.
