Caramelized onions are onions that have been cooked slowly over low heat for a long period, breaking down their natural sugars and resulting in a deep brown, sweet, and rich flavor. This process is also known as “reducing” or “cooking down” the onions. This recipe quickens the caramelization process by adding brown sugar to the onions.
